One day, while living on Guam, Denalee and Brooke and I drove out to the village of Agat and hiked out to Facpi Point. It was a beautiful day to go shell collecting. Other than being hot and humid, it was like paradise. We put on our dive booties and started down the beach. Facpi Point is along the South-western shoreline of Guam between Orote Point and the southern tip of the island. The weather was perfect and we enjoyed being completely alone. Facpi Point is in a very uninhabited part of Guam. (see map)
Brookie could always keep herself occupied. I don't remember but it looks like she found an empty bottle on the beach and was making use of it. We found all kinds of cone shells and cowries.
Cowrie Shells
When we decided to head back, Brookie was tired. She wanted me to carry her. I found a bamboo pole that I made a chair for her to sit on. I held it behind me and she sat on it and hung onto my neck.
The funny thing about these photos is that they don't show you just how hot, sweaty, and muggy it was. I still miss the smell of the salt air. Denalee was with us and I am sad that we didn't take any pictures of her.
Some memories I have about Facpi Point:
I can remember driving back around Facpi Point on the way back from a charter cruise to the southern part of the island after dark. We would spotlight out over the water for flying fish. When we would get one in the spot we would track it until it would finally lose its momentum and glide back into the sea. Sometimes we would see them for up to 45 seconds. As the boat came up on them they would panic and swim as fast as they could and then launch themselves up out of the water, spread their wings and glide in a big semi-circle toward the wind until they would drop back into the sea when they were out of momentum.
The flying fish were a beautiful translucent greenish-blue color when we would spotlight them.
Another time I can remember seeing a Mahi-mahi erupt out of the water right next to the boat. It was chasing a Flying Fish. It looked like it was bouncing across the water because it could only jump out of the sea for a short time before gravity would take it back down. When it was under the surface was when it was paddling to maintain its speed. It chased the Flying Fish in a semi-circle around the bow of the Sea Odyssea II until it finally caught the Flying Fish in its mouth. It was spectacular!
